When you get in your car and it won’t start, it can be due to a number of different problems. Nonetheless, it can cause panic especially if you are away from home. Sometimes when a car fails to start, the problem can be easily fixed with the aid a roadside assistance. Other times you may need to have your car towed to a mechanic’s shop. Cheap Towing would like to share some of the common causes for why a car may fail to start and whether you need towing or roadside assistance services.
Why Won’t My Car Start?
Dead Car Battery: One of the most common causes as to why a car won’t start is due to a dead car battery. Dead batteries are simple enough to discover. When you turn the key over and it make no noise, or you hear a quick clicking noise with no power this is a sign of a dead battery. Another way to test to see if the battery is dead is to either turn on the windshield wipers or roll down an electric window. Both require the battery to work. You may be able to jump start the battery. If so, this can help you at least get home or to an auto store to replace the battery.
Broken Ignition Switch: Another problem that can prevent a car from starting up is the ignition switch. If you performed all of the battery tests, such as turning on the lights or using the window or windshield wipers, and they all work, then it not the battery. However, it may be due to an issue with the ignition switch which requires a mechanic to inspect and repair. If the ignition is broken then it may require your vehicle to be towed.
Bad Starter: When the battery is working fine but you’re hearing clicking each time you turn the key over to start the car, then this may be a starter problem. Again, the starter will require a mechanic to repair. If the starter is broken, ask for a towing service to help get your vehicle to an auto shop for repairs.
Ran Out of Gas: Often a vehicle won’t start for the simplest reasons, such as the vehicle simply ran out of gas. Sometimes we lose sight of our fuel level or our fuel gauge may be broken and you didn’t realize you were out of gas. If you’re out of fuel don’t panic, call a road side assistance service. They can bring you fuel and can provide enough for you to reach a gas station.
Clogged Fuel Filter: Sometimes a car will fail to start because the fuel filter is clogged. Most people will forget that a fuel filter should be changed out about every 10,000 miles. When the fuel filter gets clogged, not enough fuel gets to the starter to start up the engine. In most cases, simply by changing out the fuel filter is all that is needed to get your vehicle up and going again. You may need to tow your vehicle or ask for roadside assistance if this happens. They can help change out the fuel filter or clean it enough to get you back on the road.
